Tax Practice Leader (CPA preferred)
Hook Law is seeking an entrepreneurial tax professional to build, institutionalize, and lead our growing tax practice. This is a rare opportunity for a CPA or experienced tax advisor who wants more than a book of returns—someone who wants to design a practice, shape strategy, and create lasting impact within a well established trusts and estates law firm. Trusts and Estates experience is NOT a requirement.

Job Description
The Opportunity
Hook Law’s tax practice is deeply integrated with our estate planning, estate administration, and fiduciary litigation work. Our focus is on tax planning and tax compliance, with particular emphasis on:
- Fiduciary income tax returns (Form 1041)
- Gift tax returns (Form 709)
- Trust, estate, and beneficiary level tax planning
- Advisory work for executors, trustees, families, and closely held businesses
This is not a high volume retail tax model. The work is technical, collaborative, and advisory driven—serving clients with complex family, fiduciary, and wealth transfer needs.
Your Role
This position is intentionally designed to be both hands on and strategic.
You can expect to spend approximately 30–40% of your time “in the business”, including:
- Interpreting estate planning documents and trust instruments alongside attorneys
- Determining tax positions and best courses of action in administering trust and estate assets
- Reviewing fiduciary, gift, and related tax returns for accuracy, completeness, and technical soundness
- Advising clients on tax planning strategies tied to estate administration and longterm planning
The majority of your time will be spent “on the business,” helping to design and grow the tax practice itself, including:
- Developing the strategy and vision for the firm’s tax offering
- Designing systems, workflows, and processes that scale
- Identifying staffing needs and helping build the right team
- Collaborating with firm leadership on pricing, service models, and client experience
- Institutionalizing tax services within a multi office, growing firm
You will have a meaningful voice in defining what this practice becomes.
Who We’re Looking For
This role is ideal for someone who:
- Is a CPA or senior tax professional with experience building a tax practice
- Enjoys collaborating with attorneys and translating legal documents into practical tax decisions
- Thinks like an owner or builder, not just a technician
- Wants to grow something durable rather than simply manage a book of work
- Is excited by structure, systems, and longterm practice development
- Values thoughtful client service over transactional volume
Prior leadership experience is welcome, but an entrepreneurial mindset is essential.
